Early Blackberries

The first blackberries have ripened in the back lane! This is about three weeks early and I know August has heard its marching orders. These berries were yummy, but didn’t quite evoke the same feelings as Autumn berries.

There’s some protection offered by late and chilly September nights that numb the hands from the occasional thorn scratch or nettle sting as the swollen fruits fall into your hands with the slightest brush. For now, however, I’ll mix them with our wild strawberries and store cherries and cling to summer a little longer.
