For years we grew unknown potato varieties originally picked from an organic veggie delivery box. I can’t remember if it was a poor harvest, failing to hold some back for planting, or untimely sprouting, but we lost that stock. These two varieties are my first consciously chosen varieties and my first time growing something other than maincrop. With a toddler, there’s only one safe propagation windowsill in the house so I’m trying to chit them in the greenhouse.
The 1st Early variety is organic ‘Colleen’. Apparently, 1st earlies are harvested before the plants flop: just when they flower in June or July. The maincrop potato is ‘Desiree’ and follows how I’ve always harvested my potatoes: after the plants start to die back.
