Easter Eggs

To prepare for Easter last month, we counted the plastic eggs before leaving them out for the Easter Bunny. We started with fewer eggs than last year and a few more were broken this year.

Outdoor hunts are now a pretty firm tradition with Sunshine. This was the first year that the Easter Bunny had to do an indoor hunt in our household (the plastic eggs have holes in the ends & Sunshine received jokes and redeemable coupons). Since it was ‘dry’ later on, Sunshine asked for a very tricky outdoor hunt. I went to hide the eggs, which was a lot of fun and made me giggle, then we enjoyed watching Sunshine search.

Over the holiday weekend, Honey and I started talking about how we might enable the Easter Bunny to hide eggs in the future without buying more plastic eggs. I’ve seen families sew cute egg-shaped pouches to hide, but I wanted something waterproof so they can go out in our yard overnight or when showers are forecast.

Honey suggested rocks to hide, and then either matched to or traded in for the ‘contents’ (commonly coins, jokes, etcetera) of the egg, which the Easter Bunny would place in pouches. I thought of making the aforementioned egg-shaped pouches as bunting and ever-practical Honey suggested a sort of wall hanging with simple pockets that we could also use as an advent calendar.

While I still have to design and make the wall pockets, we got right to work on the rock eggs. We’ve chosen 25 eggs and have been decorating them (with paint pens) as a family. It’s been a joy to create these ‘eggs’ together and I know they’ll feel even more special over time.
